Co-Occurring Disorders

In the behavioral health field, a co-occurring disorder—also known as a dual diagnosis—refers to the presence of both a mental health condition and a substance use disorder at the same time.

Understanding Co-Occurring Disorders

The signs and symptoms of one condition may share some aspects with another condition.  A trained mental health professional can evaluate each person individually to determine the underlying issues and appropriate course of treatment.

Signs and Symptoms

Symptoms of a co-occurring disorder could include:

  • Loss of interest in activities once enjoyed
  • Changes in appetite or weight
  • Dramatic or sudden mood swings
  • Irritability
  • Social isolation
  • Disordered thinking
  • Changes in sleep patterns (excessive sleeping or not sleeping)
  • Suicidal thoughts

You Are Not Alone

Understanding
Co-Occurring Disorders

People who are experiencing depression may have been coping with it their entire lives or perhaps there was a recent life event that caused the onset of depression.

How Common Is It?

According to the 2023 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 35% of U.S. adults aged 18 and older are living with a co-occurring disorder.

Fast Facts

Symptoms of one disorder can intensify or mask the symptoms of the other, complicating diagnosis and treatment. In some cases, substance use may reduce the effectiveness of psychiatric medications or make individuals less likely to seek or adhere to treatment.

Key Insights

To promote long-term recovery, it is essential to treat both conditions together through an integrated care model. This approach addresses the full scope of a person’s needs—mental, emotional, physical, and behavioral—improving outcomes and reducing the likelihood of relapse.
